In Shandong
Paper-cutting, as a Chinese folk handicraft art, is a representative treasure of Chinese folk culture and art, regardless of the straightforwardness of the northern style or thesubtle sensibility of the southern style.
Yantai paper-cut originated in the Yuan Dynasty and flourished in the Ming and Qing Dynasties, with a unique style of being fine and delicate, vivid and lively. It features various themes such as plum blossoms, phoenix, peony flowers, Chinese zodiac symbols, famous tourist attractions, and Peking opera masks. It focuses on the substance of the content and does not rigidly adhere to the form, with the expression of the ideal life of wealth, good fortune, many children and longevity. In 2008, Yantai paper-cut was selected into the national intangible cultural heritage list.
Yantai paper-cut was first used to beautify homes, and people cut colorful paper into various flowers, animals or human figures to tell stories and paste them on windows and lintels as decorations during festivals. With the development of the times, paper-cutting has changed from an ornament to a carrier of people's good wishes and the spirit of the times, conveying truth, kindness and beauty through the superb storytelling.
In recent years, Yantai paper-cut has also been innovating in inheritance. The inheritors have skillfully crafted their paper cuttings into a number of exquisite peripheral products involving seven categories: porcelain, fabric, lighting, decoration, sculpture, household daily necessities and office supplies. In terms of content, these products are more suitable for the aesthetics of young people, offering better service in modern life. What is unexpected is that this ancient craft can also be combined with modern online games, animated short films, etc. On the eve of the Chinese New Year in 2022, CCTV produced a Chinese New Year animated short film entitled “As dynamic as a tiger“, which incorporated Yantai paper-cutwork “Window Blossomsof the Tiger Year“. With the support of the local government, Yantai paper-cut has also been introduced into schools and scenic spots, injecting new vitality to traditional skills.
Art is born on paper, and beauty comes from the ordinary. The art of Yantai paper-cut is deeply rooted in this vibrant land, where generations of inheritors have been using their ingenuity to tell the stories of the times and showcase China's outstanding culture to the world.
